Spaceheads album featuring Vincent Bertholet on double bass released on Electric Brass Records on 21st Nov 2016
The album is called “Laughing Water” and the video for the title track features scenes from Geneva where the album was mostly recorded – inspired by the the opening titles of the British 1960’s spy TV series “The Champions”
Vincent Bertholet is a long time friend and associate of Spaceheads and uses the double bass in the same way, instantly switching from melodic grooves to expressive improvisation as well as incorporating looping machines. He formed the Geneva based big band Orchestre Tout Puissant Marcel Duchamp, with whom he has been touring Europe and releasing albums as well as a more recent duo project, Hyperculte
“Laughing Water” has been over 11 years in the making, starting life with a series of recordings in Vincent’s hometown of Geneva in 2005, and finally being completed earlier this year with several sessions in both Geneva (Cave 12 – pictured below)and Demon Recordings in Cheshire nearer to home for Spaceheads (– news and video from that session here)
The resulting sound carries at its heart the Spaceheads’ characteristic live loops, with twisting melodies set over shifting grooves, its ambient atmospheres accompanied by blissful, harmonized trumpet loops – yet each track has its own individual feel and texture which sets it apart from its neighbours.
